Arts & Learning Units

Research on the brain has revealed new understandings about the role creative and critical thinking plays in our development as innovative human beings. Below you will find links to the Middle Year's Arts Education units created by the Arts & Learning committee. The units were created using Understanding by Design as a guiding principle to our planning.  Please feel free to download the files for your use in the classroom.

Arts & Learning Committee

The Living Sky Arts & Learning committee of educators met three times this year to create units to support the new Saskatchewan Middle Years Arts Education curriculum.

Committee Members: Sarah Ficko (Maymont), Crystal Gilbert (Unity Composite High School), Chris Kent (McLurg), Jackie Kroczynski (Bready School), Shannon MacFarlane (Spiritwood High School), Kelly Waters (St. Vital), Kali Weber (North Battleford Comprehensive High School), and Sherron Burns (Arts Education Consultant, LSKY).

Our goals were to:

• create understanding around Big Ideas and Enduring Understanding in the Arts
• design a planning template that incorporates Understanding by Design as we develop our units
• use documentation of student activity purposefully as we reflect on learning
• share our ideas with our community of Arts Educators, support one another and expand our thinking through critical conversations

Are you interested in being a part of this group next year?

We will continue to create units in Arts Education, but with a greater focus on authentic assessment tools and strategies. We hope to better understand rubrics and ways to construct meaningful language.
